My neighbor also has a rare wagon of questionable reliability. Manual W8 Passat. Breaks down roughly 2x as often as mine. If he ever decides he’s had enough, I 100% plan on lowballing him incessantly until he caves to my offer.

start lowballing NOW , while the parts are still warm, and intact....... so that he knows that you are at least interested in the “ heap” ..... when the car does give it up, you should IN THEORY be first in line, at which time you can LOW low ball him, because it is now not running........ BUT it is never to early to start.........

Yes. One of two I’ve been up close and personal with! This one is is fairly beat. The other one belonged to a wi ndow washing client. Absolutely mint. Single owner. The guy’s pride and joy. But he said VW dealerships and most private Euro shops wouldn’t touch it, and parts were incredibly difficult to source

You sound like a man who knows things, and stuff

They’re only fast when they’re running.
(H onestly though, I like that Volvo.)

But they're ALWAYS comfortable

I’m pretty sure my Paseo could be more comfortable... and slower.

i HAVE bought a whole lot of junk over the years....... it can get to be almost a sport.... before you give him the LOW lowball number let him know that you dont want to hurt his feelings with a real low number, but it just isnt worth THAT much the way it sets ......... get a ballpark number on its scrap value, and work from there........
so much fun to be had...........

So it’s back?!
I had a 1993 960 Turbo wagon in high school. IIRC, my dad paid $500 cash for it in a non-running state. I was by no means nice to that thing, but damn it was fun to drive and mad comfy. I miss it now.

When you low ball the W8 how much cash do you demand from him?

The benefit of the manual transmission is you still have a clutch and shifter to play with when you're sitting in it making engine noises pretending it still runs.

I wouldn’t know anything about that
*dash lights turn off mid-drive*

These seats are pretty comfy.... I’m guessing you have me beat with comfy suspension, cabin noise and lack of rattles. Probably by quite a bit

Yes! I had a shop do the timing belt, cam seals, PCV system, and a few other things. Engine is fantastic, but I’ve ran into a ton of little electrical things that I can fix myself.... If they ever give me a chance to catch up
You need another old Volvo in your life. Well... Not really old.

I see that you too are a connoisseur of fine automobilia, good sir.
$1000 and he gets to make it my problem. How's that?

I suspect keeping one of those running now likely involves a fabricator custom-making things like timing stuff on a CNC machine, or maybe you can convert it to W12 parts.

that will cover your first month of the good fight to keep it on the road.

I absolutely do, and I’d love another longroof in my future. Now isn’t the time, but hopefully I can find a good one at the right time.
